Data showing the short term movements in the output of industries in the production, construction and market services sectors for July to September 2019.

The chart shows the time series for the indices of production, construction, and market services since 1999. The overall trend is the indices of market services and  production have generally increased since 1999. Whereas, the index of construction has fluctuated over the same time period.

Main points

The Index of Market Services for Wales increased by 4.0% in the year to September 2019, compared with the previous twelve months. UK output increased by 2.1% over the same period. The growth in Wales was largely accounted for by an increase in Transport and Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities.

There was a 0.9% decrease in the latest quarter compared with the previous quarter in Wales. UK output increased by 0.5%, over the same period.

The Index of Production for Wales decreased by 2.5% in the year to September 2019, compared with the previous twelve months. UK output decreased by 0.6% over the same period. The growth in Wales was largely accounted for by an increase in Food, Beverages and Tobacco.

The short term trend for Wales shows a 4.7% increase when comparing the latest quarter to the previous quarter. UK output increased by 0.1% over the same period.

The Index of Construction for Wales increased by 10.1% in the year to September 2019, compared with the previous twelve months. UK output increased by 1.8% over the same period.

The short term trend for Wales shows a 3.8% increase when comparing the latest quarter to the previous quarter. UK output increased by 1.2% over the same period.

Note

The Office for National Statistics published experimental estimates of Welsh GDP for the first time in September 2019. We want to hear about how you use the short term output indicators in this release, in light of this new development.
