Eifion Jones from Llangadfan in Powys has been chosen as a Finalist in the St David Awards Young Person category for developing his engineering skills into a business.

He has been working with metal since receiving an arc welder as a Christmas present when he was 12 years old. He has designed and made a number of items such as gates, cattle feeders and fencing boxes. For his AS in Design and Technology, he designed an ‘Easy Fencer’, which has been nominated for the WJEC Student Innovation Awards.

The Easy Fencer is a machine which allows farmers to gather old fences much easier, quicker and tidier than by hand. It’s also a machine that helps to place new fences, tightening it quickly and efficiently with a way of adapting the distance between the fence and posts and the angle of the fence.

He has also set up his own agricultural engineering company, which he runs from a shed at home.

Eifion is a keen member of the local Young Farmers Club and helps the local community by cutting the grass and felling trees at the local church.
