Young Person award 2018 winner

Jasmine Williams is 11 years old. She lives in Llantwit Fardre near Pontypridd with her parents and 3 siblings and attends Bryncelynnog Comprehensive School. Jasmine (Jas for short) is cheerful and sporty, she loves football and going to the cinema.

Last Christmas, Jasmine was at the cinema with her family. As they were leaving, Jas noticed a homeless man sitting on the pavement. Without hesitation she gave him her pocket money but still couldn’t stop thinking about him when she got home. Jas then started to think of ways to raise money to help other homeless people in Rhondda Cynon Taf. The first event was a Craft Fayre which raised £684.40. The next was a local family fun run around Llantwit Fadre where £628.22 was raised. There were several events and fundraising efforts to follow from Jasmine, including taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon.

So far this year, she has raised an amazing £1593.96 – and with the promise of match funding from the Cardiff Half Marathon, this makes a total of £2363.16. Jas has shown true compassion and a maturity beyond her years to help those less fortunate than herself. Her selfless and steadfast determination in raising money and awareness through so many different activities, as well as helping in a practical way through collecting clothes, toiletries and other goods, is truly exceptional.

Jas is very generous, giving up her own spare time to do all of this because she wants to make life better for others. She is also clearly inspiring those around her to do the same, and helping to change people’s lives for the better
