This log of approved data access agreements will be updated regularly to support transparency around data sharing for statistical and research purposes.

Our statement on confidentiality and data access outlines how we keep the data we use to underpin official statistics and research secure, and respect individuals' rights to privacy.

The statement also explains that confidentiality and security of personal data is an absolute priority. We also want to maximise the value of data for the public good, and may share data for specific and appropriate statistical or research purposes.

The process for data sharing is subject to a stringent approval process which:

  • assesses the project purpose
  • ensures there is a legal basis for sharing
  • considers whether there are any ethical implications
  • ensures that appropriate security measures will be in place around the data

We ensure only the minimum amount of data is provided. Unless it is otherwise absolutely necessary, personal data are not shared or we provide access to de-identified data through an appropriate secure research environment. We only share identifiable personal data where it is lawful and there is a relevant purpose.

When data is shared, a data access agreement is set up between Welsh Government and the receiving organisation. The agreement sets out how the data can be used and how long it can be stored for. After this time, the data must be deleted.
