Main points

The number of sheep and lambs has remained unchanged from 12 months ago at 9.5 million. A small increase in the number of lambs was offset by a similar fall in the number of breeding ewes.

The number of cattle and calves stands at 1.1 million although this figure fell slightly from the 2018 figure. This reduction occurred in both the dairy and beef herds.
