The study contributes to our understanding of the conditions required to enable successful community-based projects tackling loneliness and isolation.

The report:

  • identifies key barriers and enablers in volunteering approaches to tackling loneliness and social isolation among older people
  • illustrates the key enablers and barriers, using case studies and available literature
  • sets out an outline Theory of Change illustrating how programmes have the potential to reduce loneliness and social isolation among older people
  • provides a framework for the future self-evaluation of programmes to add to the available evidence base.
