Jane Hutt, Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Chief Whip and Trefnydd
On behalf of the people and the government of Wales I wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the people of India, the Indian community in Wales and those affected by the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad.
Welsh Government officials remain in contact with UK Government counterparts. We understand the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (MHCLG) are coordinating efforts with the Indian authorities to identify the families of the victims to provide consular assistance and support in communities here in the UK.
The devastating tragedy will be felt by communities across the world, including here in Wales, where we sadly lost Akeel Nanabawa from Newport, alongside his young family.
The Welsh Government is a signatory of the Charter for Families Bereaved by Public Tragedy, as are many public sector bodies in Wales. We are steadfast in this commitment and will do our best to support those impacted by this tragedy.
Wales and India have a long-established friendship and our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who have sadly lost their lives, as well as everyone in India and Wales affected by this devastating event.
Wales stands in solidarity with India, and the Indian community in Wales, at this difficult time.
