I am pleased to announce that families in Flying Start areas are receiving the first Baby Bundles this week. This marks a significant milestone in our support for parents during the earliest, most impactful months of their child's life.

The Baby Bundle includes essential items for newborns and their parents, providing practical help and support as families prepare for their baby’s arrival. Each bundle includes a range of clothing from newborn to six months, warm blankets, muslin cloths, bibs, thermometer, maternity and nursing pads, a playmat and a baby book. They also include useful information and advice about parenting and support programmes.

Midwives have raised awareness of the programme with eligible parents from 16 weeks of pregnancy, with registration taking place at antenatal appointments between 25-28 weeks. Once registered, families receive their baby bundle between 32-34 weeks of pregnancy. Midwives may also register a limited number of families, who live outside Flying Start areas, but are particularly in need of support.

As the cost of living remains high, many families continue to experience difficulties in paying for household essentials, such as food and heating. This targeted programme helps eligible families by easing some of the financial pressures associated with preparing for a new baby. This approach allows support to be focused where it can make the greatest difference.

The programme is also delivering positive benefits for the local economy. APS Group Ltd and their Wales based sub-contractors, provide customer support, manufacturing, packing, and distribution of the Baby Bundles, creating and sustaining local jobs and skills.

The Welsh Government remains committed to tackling child poverty. The first deliveries of the Baby Bundles offer a tangible demonstration of that commitment. I look forward to sharing further updates as the programme continues.
