From the 25 November, midwives will begin helping families in Flying Start areas to register for a Baby Bundle, at antenatal appointments, between 25 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. The first Baby Bundles will be delivered to families from the beginning of February 2026.
Baby Bundles contain essential items to support new parents and their babies such as 0-6 months clothing, blankets, thermometer, a bilingual book and playmat. They also include useful information and advice about parenting and support programmes.
On 3 November, alongside the Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, I met with APS, the main supplier for the Baby Bundles programme, and their Wales based sub-contractors. I was impressed with the excellent quality of the bundle contents. It was also encouraging to hear the positive impact the programme is having in creating and sustaining local employment.
Since September, midwives across Wales have been informing eligible families about the programme during their 16-week antenatal appointments. Midwives will also be able to register a limited number of expectant parents for the programme, who live outside Flying Start areas, but are particularly in need of support.
As the cost of living remains high, many families continue to experience difficulties in paying for household essentials, such as food and heating. This targeted investment not only helps families reduce essential costs but also strengthens our local economy and supports our ongoing commitment to tackling child poverty.
Additionally, the Baby Bundles programme helps deliver economic benefits for Wales. By partnering with Welsh-based suppliers and social enterprises, the programme is creating and sustaining jobs and apprenticeships, supporting inclusive employment, and reinvesting in local communities.
