Today, I am pleased to publish the outcome of the recent Welsh Government consultation on exempting care leavers from council tax.  After considering the responses, I am also pleased to announce my intention to bring forward legislation which will ensure that care leavers are exempt from council tax from 1 April 2019.

The consultation ended on 19 December 2018 and received responses from care leavers, local authorities, third sector organisations and individual taxpayers.  Over 90% of respondents expressed their support for our proposals.

The Welsh Government is committed to doing everything we can to support care leavers and enable their successful transition into adulthood and independent living.

In Taking Wales Forward, the Welsh Government made a commitment to making council tax fairer.  We have an extensive programme of work in progress to examine how the council tax system can be improved over the short, medium and longer terms to continue delivering on this commitment.
