Further to my statement on 24 June, I am pleased to announce the details of the implementation group to guide the transition towards a ban on greyhound racing in Wales.

The group is made up of dedicated individuals, representing a broad spectrum of the greyhound racing industry, animal health and welfare, and social and community sectors.

Dr Emily Blackwell, a Senior Lecturer in Animal Behaviour and Welfare at Bristol Vet School, will chair the group. Dr Blackwell will be supported in her role by two veterinary surgeons and representatives of Valley Stadium, Wales’ only greyhound racing track, local authorities, Cut the Chase Coalition and animal charities.

The group met for the first time today to discuss its remit and work plan.

Legislation will be brought forward in the autumn. However, there is a lot of work to do in advance of the ban coming into force. We need to ensure the dogs, their owners, and those involved in the industry can transition away from racing in a planned and reasonable way. This includes safeguarding the welfare of the dogs currently within the industry, while ensuring there is minimal impact to the local community and economy.

We want Wales to be an exemplar for the highest standards of animal health and welfare. The ban is one way we can work towards meeting that goal, and the implementation group has a key role to play. Its combined knowledge will help us as we proceed with this important work.
