In accordance with the inter-institutional relations agreement, I can report to Members that I chaired the Interministerial Group meeting on Net Zero, Energy and Climate Change on 6 May 2025.

The meeting was attended by Gillian Martin MSP, Acting Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero and Energy, Sarah Jones MP, Minister of State at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and the Department for Business and Trade, Mary Creagh CBE MP, Minister for Nature, James Murray MP, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, Mike Kane MP, Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Security, Andrew Muir MLA, Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs and a senior official from the Department for the Economy at the NI executive (deputising for the Minister for the Economy).

The Interministerial Group considered the future direction and objectives of the UK Emissions Trading Scheme. This involved discussions on the UK Government’s EU relations activity, each administration’s priorities and challenges, as well as areas for cross-UK action in meeting the ambitions of the Scheme, including energy from waste.

The Scottish Government will chair the next Interministerial Group meeting online.

The communiqué from the meeting has been published on GOV.UK.
