Rebecca Evans, Cabinet Secretary Economy, Energy & Planning
With less than 1000 days to go until the Tournament kicks off on 9 June 2028, I am pleased to confirm Wales’ commitment to hosting the UEFA European Championship in 2028, alongside our UK and Irish partners. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to showcase Wales on the global stage and deliver lasting benefits for our communities.
The Welsh Government will invest up to £30 million to support the successful delivery of the tournament. This funding underpins our ambition to maximise the social and economic impact of EURO 2028 across Wales. Updated analysis shows the tournament is expected to generate £3.6 billion in socio-economic benefits for the UK and Ireland – a significant increase from earlier estimates. Up to £250m is the estimated Wales share of these opportunities.
Our investment is not just about football. It is about creating a legacy that strengthens inclusion, connects communities, and builds economic opportunity. Through targeted programmes, we will promote mental health, equality, and wellbeing, ensuring the tournament leaves a positive imprint far beyond the pitch.
The National Stadium of Wales, Cardiff, will proudly host the opening game, and we look forward to welcoming fans from across Europe. This event will celebrate our culture, inspire participation, and drive growth in tourism and local economies. EURO 2028 is more than a sporting spectacle; it is a catalyst for progress.
