Growing Wales’ economy, supporting high‑quality employment, and ensuring our communities are well connected remain core priorities for the Welsh Government.

The Wrexham Western Gateway is a strategically important site with the potential to unlock new business, innovation, and employment opportunities for North Wales. To support this potential, we have worked closely with Wrexham County Borough Council, Transport for Wales, Ambition North Wales and key stakeholders to address long‑standing infrastructure constraints —particularly in relation to local network capacity, sustainable transport access, and operational pressures at A483 Junction 4.

Following detailed consideration of the WelTAG study recommendations and all consultation responses, I can today confirm that the Welsh Government will invest over £1.5 million during the next 18 months to progress a package of preferred transport measures that will enable the development of the Western Gateway site.

These preferred measures include:

A483 Junction 4 Improvements

  • We will immediately start progressing the design development and environmental assessment work for a new grade‑separated junction to the south of the existing A483 Junction 4, with a view to publishing draft Orders during spring 2027.
  • A joint technical study will also assess opportunities to enhance the efficiency of the traffic signals at the Junction 5 roundabouts to improve traffic flow and safety on this key junction into Wrexham.

Walking, Cycling and Rail Access Improvements

  • Wrexham Council will undertake feasibility and design work for a new priority cycle route linking Wrexham General Station to the Western Gateway during 2026/27, subject to annual funding decisions.
  • Wrexham Council and Transport for Wales will examine the bus service recommendations identified through the WelTAG process as part of the wider programme of national bus reform.
  • Options for the future operation and funding of improved bus provision to the Western Gateway will be explored to support modal shift and ensure reliable access for workers and businesses.

Bus Service Enhancements

Together, these measures will deliver substantial benefits:

  • A new, modernised junction will enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and unlock the full development potential of the Western Gateway.
  • New walking and cycling routes will support healthier, more sustainable travel choices.
  • Improved public transport connectivity will widen access to employment opportunities and support modal shift.

Public engagement on the preferred options will take place during 2026 to ensure communities and businesses remain fully informed of the next steps. Welsh Government officials will continue to work collaboratively with Wrexham Council, Transport for Wales, Ambition North Wales and statutory bodies to secure the consents required for delivery.

I remain committed to advancing this package at pace and ensuring that the transport infrastructure supporting the Wrexham Western Gateway is delivered as quickly as practicably achievable — positioning Wrexham and the wider North Wales region for sustained economic growth.
