Earlier today the First Minister published Prosperity for all – the national strategy. It sets the aims of this government and provides clarity for our partners about the changes we want to make in Wales and how we want government and delivery partners to be part of a new approach to delivering priorities.

Our strategy acknowledges that how we deliver can be just as important as what we deliver, and in order to make a real difference to people’s lives, we need to do things differently and to do different things. We are fortunate in Wales that Welsh law, through the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 supports us, and others in that work.

The Well-being of Future Generations Act acknowledges the contribution that everyone can make to our shared goals for Wales and gives us a basis for creating a different kind of public service in Wales. To ensure that we fulfil the potential to be the agile public sector of a small nation, then clarity on our objectives, the steps we will take and how we will work differently is needed to bring about this change.

Within the national strategy you will find the twelve objectives of Government and the steps we propose to take to meet them. These are the Government’s well-being objectives which replace those initial objectives from November 2016. These objectives are integral to the strategy, set out the areas that the Welsh Government can make the greatest contribution to the goals and provide the basis for strong partnerships with others. They place the Well-being of Future Generations Act at the heart of our decision making. Alongside Prosperity for all – the national strategy, today I have also published an updated well-being statement, explaining how the well-being objectives in the national strategy will contribute to the seven well-being goals for Wales. This update reflects our ongoing commitment to develop and improve our response to the Act.
