Ensuring the safety and reliability of the strategic road network is my primary transport concern and the Road Safety Framework for Wales outlines the actions the Welsh Government and our partners will take to reduce the numbers of people killed or seriously injured on Welsh roads.

The road safety charity Brake runs an annual Road Safety Week campaign with this year’s taking place between the 21 and 27 November. This year’s theme is ‘Make the Brake Pledge’ which seeks commitment to six key behaviours: slow, sober, secure, silent (mobile), sharp, sustainable.

As part of this year’s events, the Welsh Government  will be  participating by using our Variable Message Signs to display messages reminding drivers of the need for regular eyesight testing and supporting the ‘sharp’ element of the pledge.

Our Variable Message Signs are already used to display a variety of bilingual road safety messages throughout the year when they are not needed for operational messages. Brake will also be monitoring the reaction to the signs with a view to providing an evidence base to support continuing periodic messaging. I have asked my officials to work with them so that we can consider the effectiveness of this approach for future events.
