When the Welsh Government announced the introduction of restrictions on 21 December to combat the Omicron variant in Wales, including playing sports behind closed doors from 26 December, a £3m Spectator Sports Fund was simultaneously announced to support the sector.

Ahead of restrictions for spectator sports easing this weekend, I am pleased to announce that the first phase of support, covering the period from 26 December to 9 January, is being allocated.

The first phase provides funding of £1,024,100 to football, rugby union, and ice hockey fixtures that have taken place over that period and three horseracing meetings.

A second phase of funding will be considered for other fixtures and race meetings held between 10 January and 21 January. The full list of awards will be published on completion of the Fund.
