Rebecca Evans MS, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning
I am pleased to announce today the establishment of a Strategic AI Advisory Group to provide expert advice to Ministers on the adoption of AI across the public sector in Wales.
We have seen unprecedented growth in the use of Artificial Intelligence and data-driven technologies in recent years. The Welsh Government recognises that harnessing the power of these new technologies offers us opportunities to deliver better outcomes for citizens and strengthen the Welsh economy. We also know, however, that equality, trust and safety must be at the heart of our thinking on AI.
The Strategic AI Advisory Group will bring together distinguished experts from academia, industry, and the public sector to provide independent advice on strategic opportunities for how AI can support public service transformation to improve citizen outcomes and drive efficiencies. The group will also advise on the ethical and effective deployment of AI in devolved public services. This cross-sectoral forum reflects our deeply rooted social partnership approach and will serve as a key advocate for responsible innovation and the ethical application of emerging technologies.
To further embed this commitment within government, we are also establishing a dedicated Office for AI within the Welsh Government. This new unit will strengthen our internal capability, facilitate informed policymaking, and support meaningful collaboration with stakeholders across Wales, the UK, and internationally.
I am confident that the Strategic AI Advisory Group, working with the support of the Welsh Government’s Office for AI, will ensure that technological advancement serves the public good and aligns with the values of Welsh society.
