Today I am pleased to publish statutory guidance which provides advice on supporting learners with healthcare needs.

Many learners will have a short-term healthcare need at some point which may affect their participation in educational activities. Other learners may have significant or long-term healthcare needs affecting their cognitive or physical abilities, their behaviour or emotional state.

I am committed to ensuring that all learners, including those with healthcare needs, are able to access and enjoy their education and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. The statutory guidance I am publishing today will support local authorities and governing bodies to meet their duties towards learners with healthcare needs.

It emphasises the need for a collaborative approach, placing the learner at the centre of decision making.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have been involved in the development of the guidance.
