I am today laying the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Development and Climate Change Annual Report. This report fulfils our duties under section 79(6) of the Government of Wales Act 2006 and Section 80 of the Climate Change Act 2008 and covers our progress on sustainable development and climate change since April 2014.

As we will be moving to a new way of reporting for the next Assembly term, as required by the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015, this report will be the last of its type. It also features for the last time a commentary from Peter Davies, outgoing Commissioner for Sustainable Futures and Chair of the Climate Change Commission for Wales. It therefore signifies the end of a chapter in our devolution history. I am sincerely grateful to Peter for his work over the years, which has been instrumental in the progress we have made here in Wales.

Looking ahead, as we now move to the new arrangements under the Well-being of Future Generations (Act) 2015 and Environment (Wales) Bill which puts sustainable development and climate change at the heart of government in Wales, I look forward to working with, Sophie Howe, the first statutory Commissioner for Future Generations, in helping to make our ambitions a reality.
