Welsh Government’s Farm Liaison Service (FLS) is celebrating 25 years since its launch.
The service was established in 2001 during the Foot and Mouth outbreak. Restrictions prevented officials from visiting farms. And the outbreak was having a devastating impact on farmers and their businesses.
In response, a group of on-farm inspection staff began contacting farmers by phone. They shared:
- the latest information on the outbreak
- livestock movement rules, and
- other key updates
They also provided a listening ear during an exceptionally difficult time.
The pilot was well received by farmers and stakeholders. It became the foundation for the service that exists today.
How the FLS supports farmers
The eight-member team, many with farming backgrounds, attend:
- livestock markets
- agricultural shows, and
- industry events
to advise on Welsh Government rural affairs policies, grants and schemes.
The FLS offers free, confidential guidance on Welsh Government farming:
- policies
- payments, and
- regulatory requirements
This includes:
- Sustainable Farming Scheme
- agricultural pollution regulations
- animal health
- record-keeping
- RPW Online, and
- Farming Connect
Additional support
The team also supports farming families, who are:
- facing bereavement
- financial hardship, or
- poor mental health and wellbeing
They work with rural charities to signpost further help where needed.
