Introduction

This is the latest in a series of quarterly updates, for users of Welsh statistics, on our latest developments, consultations, and plans.

A full list of our most recent publications can be found on our upcoming calendar.

Consultation on statistical outputs

We recently ran a 12-week consultation on statistical outputs, from 19 November 2025 to 11 February 2026. The consultation was published on our website and included questions relating to a range of proposals across stats topics. A total of 59 responses were received to the main consultation. All responses have been analysed and taken into account and presented in the summary of responses

Responses emphasised the importance of clear signposting to statistics produced by organisations other than the Welsh Government. We will support users by publishing a guide to where to find statistics about Wales. We will also work with other statistics producers across the UK to ensure they understand Welsh user needs and use this information to improve their statistical reports.

As we implement the changes based on consultation responses, we are also taking steps to space out publications more evenly across each month to support capacity and improve the user experience. As a general approach, annual and one-off releases will be published in the first half of the month, and monthly or quarterly releases in the second half, with exceptions where necessary.

We will continue to adapt our statistical outputs in response to user feedback, ensuring that our approach remains relevant and useful. Looking ahead, we will also consider how best to serve the priority statistical needs of the next government, balancing evolving requirements with available resources.

StatsWales

Over the last quarter, our focus for StatsWales has been on delivering targeted improvements to the service, while putting stronger foundations in place for future planning. We have continued to refine usability, accessibility, and consistency across the platform, responding directly to publisher and user feedback to reduce friction in workflows wherever possible.

We have released enhancements to the consumer‑facing website that allow users to create their own tables and apply improved filtering, giving them greater control over how they explore StatsWales data.

Alongside this, we have shifted emphasis towards more structured discovery and roadmap planning. We are preparing to run focused engagement sessions to clearly identify what is working well, what is not, and where there is uncertainty. This evidence‑led approach will give us a clearer view of priorities and will directly inform a user‑centred roadmap for the next phase of StatsWales.

Economy and labour market

Economy

The role of the Welsh Economic Statistics User Group is to engage with and advise Welsh Government analysts on strategic priorities and the work plan for economic statistics in Wales. Past agenda items and presentations, as well as the terms of reference can be found online. The next meeting will be held on 20 October 2026. We are eager to extend membership of this group to a wider audience. If you would be interested in joining this group, which meets twice a year (either hybrid or online), please contact KASevents@gov.wales

In April, we published our Short-term output indicators: October to December 2025 which shows the short term movements in the output of industries in the production, construction and market services sectors. We also explained our plans to publish one more quarter of STOI data in July 2026. This is because the Office for National Statistics (ONS) plan to publish a data article containing updated quarterly regional GDP estimates in the summer, which will be the next stage in their plans to fully re-introduce quarterly regional GDP in 2027. In May, we published our Food and drink annual exports in goods: 2025 and, in June, we will publish our Food and drink economic appraisal: 2025.

If you would like to get in touch, please contact economic.stats@gov.wales

Labour market

The ONS have highlighted that the challenges with maintaining response rates for the Labour Force Survey (LFS) continue to affect data quality. As a result LFS-based labour market statistics are labelled as official statistics in development (Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR)) until further review and we continue to recommend caution when interpreting this data.

The latest updates from the ONS on the quality of the Labour Force Survey and the planned improvements for economic statistics, both published in April 2026, include information on the actions ONS have been and continue to take to improve the quality of the LFS and labour market statistics. For further information on the interventions ONS have made to improve the quality of LFS and APS labour market estimates and our advice on using these statistics for Wales, please see the latest Chief Statistician’s update: measuring the labour market in Wales (Digital and Data blog) which was also updated in April 2026.

We continue to publish our monthly labour market overview release, which brings together a range of different labour market sources. We recommend using the LFS data alongside the trends in these other measures of the labour market to gain a clearer picture of the impact different events have on the Welsh labour market.

In April we published our Annual Population Survey (APS) labour market statistics data for 2025 which includes data for UK countries and regions and also for local areas.

Other outputs published in April included the quarterly update on young people not in education, employment or training (NEET) which covers data for 2025 and provides more detailed and timely statistics on young people (those aged 16 to 24) who are NEET in Wales.

The latest update to the Levels of highest qualification held by working age adults release was also published, covering data for 2025. This release presents statistics on the highest qualification held by adults of working age in Wales and provides some breakdowns at local authority level.

Estimates based on the APS were previously classed as accredited official statistics. The APS has seen a fall in sample sizes over recent years, given this and the fact that the survey has not been reweighted to latest population estimates this accreditation has been temporarily suspended and the estimates are currently designated as official statistics (OSR). It is still appropriate to use these statistics, however users should note the increased uncertainty around estimates derived from the APS.

In May, we published Commuting in Wales: 2025 data on StatsWales which shows commuting flows from areas in Wales to other areas (both in and out of Wales) and also published the latest data on Pay differences by disability and ethnicity for 2025 which provides estimates of the median hourly pay and the pay difference between hourly earnings of employees in Wales by disability status and by ethnicity

Trade and Input Output Tables

Trade Survey for Wales

The analysis of Trade Survey for Wales 2022 is available online.

Preparation work for fieldwork to collect 2025 data is underway following the completion of a six-week pilot survey in April 2026. Fieldwork is due to take place from September to December 2026 with final datafiles and outputs presented by the contractor due in March 2027.

Welsh International Goods Trade

Results from HMRC Regional Trade Statistics (RTS) for 2025 were published 19th March 2026, with the next quarter’s data due to be published on 11th June 2026.

HMRC pre-announced significant unscheduled corrections to UK overseas trade in goods statistics (OTS) in November 2025, specifically affecting ‘Oil’ (SITC 33) and ‘Gas’ (SITC 34) exports. These revisions have now been applied to OTS and RTS.

In our recent consultation on statistical outputs, we proposed to cease publishing the annual Welsh international goods trade report (but continue with the short quarterly summary of main points for Wales). This proposal was supported by users, as noted in the summary of responses. We have therefore ceased the publication of the annual release with immediate effect. Users can continue to access the most accurate and timely data (which incorporates all revisions) through the quarterly headlines and our interactive dashboard.

For further information contact: stats.trade@gov.wales.

Supply and Use Tables and Input Output Tables

Supply-use and input-output tables for 2019 were published as official statistics in development on 11 March 2025. The 2022 supply, use and input-output tables will be published in July 2026, together with updated economic multipliers.

If you are interested in using these tables for your own research and would like advice on their application, please get in touch.

Housing

Improving Homelessness Data Collection in Wales

Currently, homelessness data in Wales is gathered through aggregate returns from local authorities, providing information on households applying for housing assistance and the outcomes of those applications. Work continues to transition to a new data collection approach that will capture individual-level data on homelessness applicants. We believe this shift will significantly enhance our understanding of homelessness in Wales and ultimately support efforts to improve outcomes for vulnerable individuals.

Following the conclusion of a data pilot that took place at the end of 2025 with a small selection of local authorities, it was agreed that the new data collection would not fully ‘go-live’ from the original April 2026 launch date. Instead, we will continue to pilot the new collection in phased stages between April 2026 and April 2027. This will give time to improve data quality, complete General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requirements, and further develop systems.

Estimates of additional housing need

OSR has released their Compliance review of Estimates of additional housing need (OSR),  following the latest publication of Estimates of additional housing need in February.

Using administrative data for new housing supply statistics

In our recent publication, Feasibility of using administrative data to measure new housing supply, we have explored how alternative sources of data could be used to enhance and quality assure our existing New house building statistics. We welcome any user views on this work and how it may support understanding of new housing supply.
