Introduction
Gross domestic product (GDP) measures the value of goods and services produced in the UK. It estimates the size of and growth in the economy.
Publication update
In July 2023, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) announced that they had paused their quarterly regional GDP publication after identifying high levels of revisions driven by data quality issues and methods for benchmarking.
The ONS recently published an update outlining recent methodological changes implemented to produce seasonally adjusted current price estimates. Further work is required to refine these methods and to finalise methods for chain volume measures to allow for estimates in real terms. ONS are planning on providing biannual updates before fully reinstating this quarterly publication.
Please note, previous quarterly regional GDP releases have used chain volume measures. However, this release uses seasonally adjusted current prices data and this, alongside the change in methodology, means it is not comparable with previous releases. Further information on the change in methodology can be found in the ONS publication.
These are official statistics in development and should be treated with caution until the methods are finalised. The data can be volatile, and quarterly movements should normally be considered alongside the long-term trend.
Up until 28 July 2026, we continued to publish our Short-term output indicators. However, as this is conceptually similar to quarterly regional GDP, our Short-term output indicators: January to March 2026 was our final publication in this series. In the future, we would advise using this publication to measure short-term changes in the Welsh economy.
The most recent GDP data in this report is for quarter 3 (July to September) 2025.
