Socio-economic influences of democratic participation

This research explored how socio-economic factors affect participation in local democracy and candidacy for elected office in Wales. It identified three main barriers: recruitment, resource, and reaction. Recruitment barriers include limited political education, lack of transparency in selection processes, and weak political networks. Resource barriers relate to time, financial constraints, and inadequate remuneration, which disproportionately affect disadvantaged groups. Reaction barriers involve discrimination, hostility, and stereotypes, particularly impacting women and minority candidates.

To address these, proposals include mentoring and outreach, clearer guidance on selection processes, targeted financial support for candidates with caring responsibilities or income loss, and measures to improve safety and challenge stereotypes. The findings inform a set of recommendations for the Welsh Government to reduce barriers and improve democratic participation.
