StatsWales Open Data Service
Do you use the StatsWales service to access or download data? We’ve been developing a more modern and user-friendly version of the service which we expect to start using during summer 2025. We will be using the Welsh Government’s Digital and Data blog to provide regular updates on plans and progress, so subscribe to the blog to keep up-to-date.
Economy and labour market
Economy
The role of the Welsh Economic Statistics User Group is to engage with and advise Welsh Government analysts on strategic priorities and the work plan for economic statistics in Wales. The group last met 13 March 2025 – the meeting predominantly focused on Input Output Tables and Trade Statistics. Items included a presentation on the publication of Input Output Tables for Wales (see below), a presentation on producing and using IOTs in Scotland and Northern Ireland, an update on Trade Survey for Wales, and the recently published ONS Inter-regional estimates of goods and services. The Chief Statistician from the Department for Business and Trade also gave an overview of the upcoming Trade Statistics Workplan. Past agenda items and presentations, as well as the terms of reference can be found online. The next meeting will be held on 14 October 2025. We are eager to extend membership of this group to a wider audience. If you would be interested in joining this group, which meets twice a year (either hybrid or online), please contact KASevents@gov.wales.
In April, we published our Regional gross domestic product and gross value added: 1998 to 2023. We also published our Short-term output indicators: October to December 2024 which shows the short term movements in the output of industries in the production, construction and market services sectors.
If you would like to get in touch, please contact economic.stats@gov.wales
Labour market
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) have highlighted that the challenges with maintaining response rates for the Labour Force Survey (LFS) continue to affect data quality. As a result LFS-based labour market statistics will be labelled as official statistics in development (Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR)) until further review and we continue to recommend caution when interpreting this data.
We continue to publish our monthly labour market overview release, which brings together a range of different labour market sources. We recommend using the LFS data alongside the trends in these other measures of the labour market to gain a clearer picture of the impact different events have on the Welsh labour market.
ONS are introducing a new Transformed Labour Force Survey (TLFS) which they plan to become the main data source for information on the labour market in the UK and Wales in the future. In April, ONS published two articles – a Labour Market Transformation update (ONS), which outlines the way forward for LFS and TLFS, including the new TLFS design and timelines for transition; and an accompanying TLFS Technical Design article (ONS) which outlines the technical evidence which informed the decision. The LFS will continue while further development of the TLFS takes place.
In March we published the annual update for Participation of young people in education and the labour market: 2022 and 2023 which provides the definitive source for estimates of the proportion of young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) in Wales. We also published Jobs Growth Wales+ statistics for October to December 2024 which presents information on young people enrolled on the Jobs Growth Wales+ (JGW+) programme.
In April we published our Annual Population Survey labour market statistics data for 2024 which includes data for UK countries and regions and also for local areas. The next update to this statistical release will be published in July 2025.
Other outputs published in April included the quarterly update on young people not in education, employment or training (NEET) which covers data for 2024 and provides more detailed and timely statistics on young people (those aged 16 to 24) who are NEET in Wales. Commuting in Wales: 2001 to 2024 data was also published on StatsWales which shows commuting flows from areas in Wales to other areas (both in and out of Wales).
The latest update to the Levels of highest qualification held by working age adults release was also published, covering data for 2024. This release presents statistics on the highest qualification held by adults of working age in Wales and provides some breakdowns at local authority level.

Trade and Input Output Tables
Trade Survey for Wales
The analysis of the 2022 data was published 16 July 2024 and is available here: Trade Survey for Wales: 2022.
There was a gap in data collection in 2024 due to budgetary pressures, but an invitation to tender for the next iteration of the survey will be advertised in summer 2025.
Welsh International Goods Trade
Headline results from HMRC Regional Trade Statistics for Wales’s international goods trade for year ending December 2024 were published 20 March 2025, with the next quarter’s data due to be published on 11 June 2025. Welsh international goods trade: 2024 was published on 10 April 2025, which contained further analysis of the 2024 data.
Alongside the above statistics, the interactive trade dashboard will be kept updated to the latest quarter’s data.
For further information contact: stats.trade@gov.wales.
Publication of Supply and Use Tables and Input Output Tables
Supply and use tables and input-output tables for 2019 were published as official statistics in development on 11 March 2025. The tables provide a snapshot of the Welsh economy and detail the buying and selling relationships of goods and services between all parts of it for 2019. This is the result of a 3-year project to better understand the Welsh Economy.
The project continues to be developed, with initial work underway to update the tables using a post-pandemic reference year. We will share further updates as this work progresses.
If you are interested in using these tables for your own research and would like advice on their application, please get in touch.
For further information contact: InputOutputTables@gov.wales.
Education
Statistics on post-16 education have now transferred to Medr. If you have any questions related to further education, school sixth form, apprenticeship or adult learning statistics, please contact statistics@medr.cymru, and your query will be passed on to the team in Medr.
Schools
Attendance data
We continued to publish fortnightly data on pupils’ attendance in maintained schools throughout the spring term. From 6 May 2025 this release will be published monthly on the first Thursday of every month and ending in August 2025. Publication will start again in the new school year in September 2025.
On 4 March 2025 we published a new statistical release on Attendance and absence from schools: September 2023 to August 2024 which amalgamates the information published in Autumn 2024 in the two separate statistical releases for primary schools and secondary schools. This release provides users with a single source of official statistics covering attendance and absence in all maintained schools. In future years we will aim to publish this release before Christmas.
Counselling for children and young people: September 2023 to August 2024 was published on 27 March 2025.
Upcoming statistical releases
An update of the statistical release on Patterns of attainment in reading and numeracy will be published on 19 June 2025.
Results from the School Census in January 2025 will be published in July 2025.

Housing
Housing Information Group (HIG) Annual Seminar
This year’s Housing Information Group annual seminar on 26 June will focus on homelessness, aiming to share recent analysis and research in this area. The day will include presentations from charities, local authorities, academics and government departments, who will provide an update on developing case level homelessness data for Wales, showcase recent research work, analysis and data linking projects which give further insights into the homeless population. It’s an opportunity for attendees to discuss statistical, research and analytical evidence, to share experience and identify shared interests in this area.
The seminar will mostly focus data relating to Wales. You can register for the event online.
2027-28 Welsh Housing Survey
The Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government has approved a business case to undertake a Welsh Housing Survey in 2027-28. This new survey will comprise two parts: a detailed social survey to gather household information required for fuel poverty analysis (such as income), as well as housing experiences and views; and a physical home inspection carried out by a qualified surveyor to gather information on the fabric and condition of the home. The 2027-28 survey will provide a wider breadth of evidence than the 2017-18 Welsh Housing Conditions Survey and will be broadly comparable to the English Housing Survey.
Through engagement with key stakeholders, Welsh Government will develop a detailed tender specification so that a procurement exercise can commence by the end of 2025-26. This will enable field work to be carried out in 2027-28, with headline results available from 2028-29, and more detailed findings from 2029-30.
Further details on the 2027-28 Housing Survey can be found in a written statement.
Since the last update, the following statistical outputs have been published:
- Homelessness accommodation provision and rough sleeping: February 2025 (published 24 April)
- Homelessness: April to September 2024 (published 6 March)
- Help to Buy – Wales (Shared Equity Loan Scheme): October to December 2024 (published 6 March)

National Survey for Wales
Please contact us at surveys@gov.wales if you have any questions.
Arts, heritage sites, libraries and museums
On 4 June we will be publishing the arts, heritage sites, libraries and museums bulletin. The bulletin will contain analysis on the proportions of people who attend and participate in arts, culture and heritage activities in Wales, and explore some of the characteristics associated with participating in these events, based on responses to the 2022 to 2023 National Survey for Wales.
Welsh language
We will also be publishing the Welsh Language bulletin over the summer. This bulletin will contain analysis on the proportions of people who speak and use the Welsh language, and explore some of the characteristics associated with speaking and using Welsh, based on responses to the 2022 to 2023 National Survey for Wales.
Social justice
Poverty and cost of living
On 27 March 2025 we published updates to annual data summaries for Wales on relative income poverty and persistent poverty, with latest data relating to financial year ending 2024. On the same day, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) published their updated suite of UK level data on income poverty and material deprivation, persistent poverty (DWP), family resources (DWP), and an update to their children in low income families local area statistics (DWP).
DWP has updated its method for estimating material deprivation, making the latest data for the financial year ending (FYE) 2024 not directly comparable to previous years. Since this is the first year using the new method, only one year of data is available. Due to sample size issues, single-year estimates for different UK countries and regions aren't published. Historically, a three-year average has been used, but recent changes exclude data from FYE 2021.
Because of these changes, DWP can't update the usual three-year estimates for Wales right now. We plan to release an article this summer explaining the changes and providing some single-year estimates for Wales, along with confidence intervals. The release date will be announced at least four weeks in advance. For more details, you can refer to the DWP technical report.
On 29 May 2025 we've published the sixth release in a quarterly series of Discretionary Assistance Fund statistics, with breakdowns by age and local authority.
Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD)
We’re currently working on producing the next update to WIMD. Our survey on proposed indicators for WIMD 2025 closed on 16 December 2024, and on 17 April 2025 we published a summary of and our response to the feedback received.
If you want to receive notification of publication updates for WIMD, please email stats.inclusion@gov.wales to subscribe.
Community safety
We published Fire and rescue incident statistics: April to September 2024 on 20 March 2025.
Following the restructuring of our fire incident and performance outputs in late 2024, we will be reviewing our Grassland fires and Deliberate fires releases ahead of their next updates in Autumn 2025 and 2026 respectively. If you are a user of these statistical outputs, please contact us at stats.inclusion@gov.wales.
Crime and justice
If you have any feedback on our Prisons and probation and Youth justice interactive dashboards, please contact stats.inclusion@gov.wales.
Equality
Gypsy and traveller caravan count
We published the Gypsy and Traveller caravan count: January 2025 statistical release on 10 April 2025. We are pausing updates to this series to review the caravan count data collection process over 2025. As part of this review, we will consider improvements to help ensure that future statistical releases accurately reflect current accommodation for Gypsy and Traveller communities in Wales.
The next data collection will provisionally occur in January 2026 following the completion of this review. If you are a user of the Gypsy and Traveller caravan count and wish to provide feedback on this publication, please contact EqualityEvidenceUnit@gov.wales.
Gender identity
The ONS have completed further quality work to provide more detailed information on the uncertainty associated with the Census 2021 gender identity estimates and guidance on their appropriate use. Please see their Census 2021 gender identity estimates for England and Wales, additional guidance on uncertainty and appropriate use article published on 26 March (ONS). We are reviewing our published statistical outputs which use Census 2021 gender identity estimates and will be adding additional guidance to the outputs to help users interpret and make appropriate use of the data. If you have any questions, please contact equalityevidenceunit@gov.wales.
For feedback and comments please contact stats.inclusion@gov.wales
Transport
In May, we published provisional estimates for police recorded road collisions: 2024 and updated our interactive dashboard, including breakdowns such as severity of injury, type of road user and collision location on a map.
For feedback and comments please contact stats.transport@gov.wales
Wales National Travel Survey
Data collection for the Wales National Travel Survey is underway, with early response rates being very positive and in line with expectations.
Preliminary, six-month data is expected to be published from March 2026, followed by the first full year dataset from October 2026. Data will then be published on an annual basis in the Autumn in the following years.
Transport for Wales have published stakeholder feedback received in response to their short survey on the Wales National Travel Survey topic prioritisation for analysis (Transport for Wales).
Transport for Wales welcome any feedback or comments on the Wales National Travel Survey at: travelsurvey@tfw.wales.
Welsh language
Annual Population Survey
Welsh language data from the Annual Population Survey for the year ending December 2024 was published on 16 April. We also updated our StatsWales tables (Annual Population Survey: Welsh language) with the latest data.
These estimates were previously classed as accredited official statistics. The APS has seen a fall in sample sizes over recent years. Given this, and the fact that the survey has not been reweighted to the latest population estimates, the OSR has agreed that this accreditation should be temporarily suspended and that the estimates should be re-designated as official statistics (OSR).
Welsh language in education data dashboard
An interactive dashboard presenting data on Welsh language in education by local authority is now available.
This tool provides data on Welsh-medium early years settings, the number and percentage of pupils studying in Welsh, registrations for Welsh language GCSEs, AS, and A levels, and the Welsh language ability of the school workforce.
Previously available in a different format, the data is now presented in a more accessible and user-friendly way, ensuring easier exploration of key insights.
Data on the Welsh language outside of Wales
Thank you to everyone who took part in our recent survey on data about the Welsh language outside of Wales. The survey is now closed, and we appreciate all the valuable feedback received. We hope to share findings from the exercise in due course.
As part of our joint programme of work with the ONS, we are exploring ways to address the current lack of comprehensive data on Welsh speakers in England and the rest of the UK. As people are increasingly more mobile, understanding these trends becomes increasingly important. We will be documenting user requirements for data about the Welsh language outside Wales and would like to continue hearing your views on what data might be valuable to you and how you would use it.
Your feedback will help shape our approach and ensure that any data collected is relevant and useful.
Learn Welsh Programme 2023 to 2024
The National Centre for Learning Welsh has published its latest annual data for 2023 to 2024. The update includes information on learner numbers, course types and levels, participation trends, and progress across the Learn Welsh programme. This data helps to build a clearer picture of Welsh language learning across Wales and beyond.
You can view the full update on the Learn Welsh Cymru website.
