Mark Drakeford MS, Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Welsh Language
Earlier this week, I received correspondence from Dr Simon Brooks, informing me that he will be stepping aside as Chair of the Commission for Welsh-speaking Communities for a period. The Commission is currently examining the situation of Welsh as a community language beyond the areas of higher density linguistic significance. Dr. Brooks is currently receiving cancer treatment.
I wish Simon all the best while receiving treatment and look forward to him resuming his role as soon as its feasible for him to do so. I would like to thank him for his comprehensive work and for his vision and leadership. The Commission’s first report has made a profound and detailed analysis of the challenges facing our higher density communities. The Welsh Government will be responding to the Empowering communities, strengthening the Welsh language report on the 29 May at the Urdd Eisteddfod in Margam.
In the meantime, Professor Elin Haf Gruffydd Jones, the vice-chair of the second phase of the Commission, has agreed to take over as interim Chair. I would like to thank Elin for stepping in to fulfil this role temporarily.
Dr Lowri Cunnington Wynn, will also assist the Commission with its work. Lowri was a member of the first phase of the Commission for Welsh-speaking Communities and brings with her considerable experience of community and social development.
I look forward to hearing more about the Commission's work and its findings over the coming year.
