What we do
The Commission for Welsh-speaking Communities was set up by the Welsh Government to make recommendations aimed at strengthening Welsh-speaking communities.
Setting up a Commission was one of the recommendations of the report 'Second Homes: Developing new policies in Wales (2021)'.
On 8 August 2024, the Chair of the Commission, Dr Simon Brooks, presented the Commission’s first phase report, 'Empowering communities, strengthening the Welsh Language', to the First Minister, Eluned Morgan. The Welsh Government’s response can be found under publications.
On 23 March 2026, the Vice-chair of the Commission, Professor Elin Haf Gruffydd Jones presented the Commission’s second phase report, 'Cymraeg in every community, strengthening the Welsh language', to the Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Welsh Language, Mark Drakeford.
