I am today launching a public consultation on the new 10-year Dementia Strategy 2026-36, which will succeed the Dementia Action Plan.

This is an important step in the development of the strategy – the feedback from the consultation will help to further shape the priorities and how we deliver them.

The strategy is focused on seven main areas:

  • Preventing and reducing people’s risk of developing dementia.
  • Raising awareness and understanding of dementia.
  • Improving dementia diagnosis, treatment, care and support.
  • Supporting unpaid carers of people living with dementia.
  • Supporting the workforce.
  • Supporting dementia research and innovation.
  • Ensuring the right governance and accountability arrangements are in place to deliver the strategy.

The strategy and its priorities have been developed in partnership with people with lived experience, their carers and experts. This input has been invaluable, and I want to thank everyone who have been involved in the external task and finish groups for their time and commitment.

The consultation will be open until 6 April 2026. This is an extended period to take account of the Christmas holiday and to maximise participation. A summary of the consultation responses will be published ahead of the final Dementia Strategy for Wales.
