About Ynni Cymru

Ynni Cymru is a Welsh Government programme, delivered with support from Local Partnerships.

Programme objectives

  • expand locally owned renewable energy
  • optimise locally owned renewable energy projects
  • accelerate deployment of smart local energy systems (SLES)
  • facilitate a just transition, retaining the benefits for Welsh communities

What are smart local energy systems (SLES)?

Within a local area, SLES bring together:

  • energy generation
  • storage
  • demand management
  • local network infrastructure

SLES help communities use more local clean energy and improve efficiency.

Who can get support

Support is available to organisations in Wales, including:

  • community enterprises and third sector organisations
  • public sector organisations
  • small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)

Support available

Health check for renewable energy assets

Free review for organisations in Wales with renewable energy assets. Assesses performance, commercial arrangements and opportunities for smart technology. Eligibility applies.

Grid support

Advice to help projects connect to and work with the electricity network. Support is available to community enterprises.

Specialist project development

Help to scope and deliver smart local energy systems (SLES), with tools for battery and other storage and for low-carbon heat technologies.

Route to market

Support to find the best way to sell or supply local energy.

Capital funding

To request support, email ynnicymru@localpartnerships.gov.uk and include:

  • your organisation name and type
  • project location and short summary
  • what support you need
