Nazrul Islam

Nazrul Islam is an outstanding youth worker whose impact across Newport has transformed the lives of young people. Through his work with EYST Wales and Bengal Dragons Foundation, Nazrul creates safe, welcoming spaces where young people can access support, guidance and positive opportunities. From drop‑in sessions and mentoring to sports projects and neurodiversity awareness, his work tackles issues such as school exclusion, anti-social behaviour and lack of opportunity - helping young people build confidence, skills and aspirations.

Nazrul’s impact in Newport extends far beyond the traditional boundaries of his role. His work is not only professional but deeply personal, rooted in his commitment to the young people, families and communities he serves. Nazrul is widely trusted by young people, parents, schools and statutory services, acting as a vital link between communities and support systems, bridging gaps that others cannot fill. Many families rely on him as their “go‑to” person in times of need. He is more than a youth worker - he is a mentor, mediator, advocate, and role model.
Through dedication, compassion, cultural understanding, and an unwavering commitment to the young people, Nazrul’s impact is both immediate and long-lasting, he is building stronger, more resilient communities by empowering the next generation with skills, confidence, and aspirations.

As one young person shared:

“Nazrul didn’t judge me or make me feel bad, he just listened and gave me his time. Every week he would meet me, sometimes through football, sometimes just to talk. Slowly, he helped me realise that I didn’t need gangs to belong and that I could actually do something positive with my life. If it wasn’t for Naz, I don’t think I’d be where I am today.”
